How these mandalas are constructed

The geometry is computed rather than traced or stock, so the radial symmetry is exact at every ring. Motifs repeat around the circumference with a controlled phase offset between layers, which is what keeps the negative space legible once the layers are stacked.

Why the voids matter

A mandala made only of line work reads flat when cut. The design works because each upper layer removes more area than the one below it, so each successive layer reveals a different portion of the pattern. The voids are the design, not gaps in it.
